Donations

Volunteer Opportunities

We'd love to have you join the Making It Home team! Below you can find descriptions of some of the opportunities we offer. Please email us if you'd like to learn more about these options or to let us know if you have other skills to offer!

Small-Item Pickups (Housewares)

  • Make contact with donor to arrange date and time to pick up preapproved items

  • Review items in-person to ensure they are usable

  • Deliver accepted items to warehouse

Large-Items Pick-ups (Furniture)

  • Make contact with donor to arrange for date and time

  • Work independently or with another volunteer to pick-up items (vehicle not required)

  • Deliver accepted items to warehouse or client home

 

Warehouse Sorting Help

  • Become familiar with what donations MIH accepts and where supplies are stored in the warehouse

  • Sort through donations

  • Restock shelves by category or item

  • Create list of “out of stock" items

  • Other projects as needed: match lamps and shades, create cleaning kits, pour cleaners into smaller bottles, fold soft goods etc

 

Preparing Items for Clients

  • Identify requested items, highlighting each pulled item on paperwork

  • Identify any missing items

  • Carefully pack items in boxes and bags for safe delivery

  • Label client name on each box/bag

At-Home Tasks

  • Wash donated items

  • Repair furniture

  • Bring items that MIH cannot use to Goodwill

Social Media

  • Create content and post it on MIH Facebook and Instagram accounts

  • Generate and implement ideas for enhancing MIH presence on social media

 

Cultivate Donations

  • Build and manage Zeffy database

  • Identify outreach opportunities to generate donations of cash and household items

  • Cultivate relationships with potential and past donors

  • Write thank-you notes

Event Production

  • Coordinate and manage events

  • Help with outreach to potential attendees

 

Fundraising

  • Identify grant opportunities

  • Help create grant proposals

Client Engagement

  • Connect with partner advocates and new clients

  • Request video of apartment and other information in advance of visit

  • Visit clients in their homes or meet with partner advocates at warehouse

  • Assess needs and document requests on intake form

  • Optional: assist with pulling and delivering requested items

 

Client Followup

  • Work with client to schedule delivery of items

  • Deliver items to client and update paperwork

  • Document any additional requests from client

Partner Agency Outreach

  • Review and update outreach documents

  • Contact agencies to arrange introductory and follow-up meetings

  • Build database of partner agencies, case managers, social workers, property managers etc

Translator

  • Assist with phone, text and/or in-person conversations

  • Priority languages: Portuguese, French, Lingala and Kinyarwanda
